SD 4: Phillip McNutt SDEC Committeeman

Brief Description:
I am the "ACTIVIST'S ACTIVIST!" Like Governor Howard Dean, I want to reactivate the Democratic Party precinct by precinct, county by county... I am committed to the strengthening of the party. A native Southeast Texan whose family roots go back to Texas' independence, I will actively involve myself throughout Southeast Texas and SD 4. I am a Precinct Organizer, Election Judge, Political Trainer, Co-Founder and Steering Committee member of Democracy For Houston, Texas Majority Builder, Campaign Advisor, event planner, Credentials Chair for SD 4 (Harris County) 2008 Convention, and past Fundraising Chair for the Harris County Democratic Party. My commitment to SD 4 is to put this experience and knowledge to work for the benefit of SD 4 and the Texas Democratic Party.

If Elected to Office:
All of my political actions have been about "CHANGE!" Robert F. Kennedy once stated " Some men see things that are and ask why? I see things that never were and ask, why not?" Progressive change begins within each one of us. I am committed to developing party leadership throughout Senate District 4 so that we can ensure that no Republican runs for office unopposed. I want to bring precinct chair / precinct organizer training to every county. I believe that the Committeman should be accessible and communicate with all Democrats throughout SD 4 on a regular basis.

SD 5: Brian Hamon SDEC Committeeman

Brief Description:
I am a life long Democrat that has been active in the party since my brother was shipped off to Iraq in February 2003. Elected to serve as a precinct chair in Williamson County in 2004, I have been extremely active in my county executive committee. Using my skills as a Senior Software Engineer at a Silicon Valley technology firm, I have found ways to leverage technology to build grassroots organization. I led a team of 25 volunteers who used my web-based distributed phone banking application to drive turnout during October 2006. As a result, Williamson county led the state in early voting turnout and Chris Bell netted more additional votes for governor over 2002 than any other county. In 2008, I coordinated the Barack Obama volunteers in Williamson County, and working with the Obama campaign staff helped engineer a decisive 13-point win in the county. In March, I served as the chair of the county convention credentials committee and managed the largest convention in county history, where more than 1,700 delegates and alternates attended.

If Elected to Office:
I will work hard to recruit quality candidates, demand accountability from TDP staff, and build our organization throughout the district. The SDEC's effectiveness is directly related to the amount of effort invested by those elected to serve. Without a focused and effective SDEC, the voices of Democrats are not heard at the highest levels of the state party. I firmly believe that the diversity of the Democratic Party is what makes this the party of ideas. I will recruit candidates that share our views: that lobbyists and corporations hold too much power, that the wealthy far too easily exchange money for power and then use their power to further enrich themselves, and that the United States must become a better global citizen and find ways to avoid violence rather than allow itself to be perceived as an aggressor, and that immediate dramatic changes must be made now to avoid the cataclysm of global climate change. The Democratic Party is the party of reform. Never has humanity been in greater need of meaningful reform. As a member of the SDEC, I will work to position the party to be an agent of reform.

SD 11: Loretta Davis SDEC Committeewoman

Brief Description:
Lifelong activist Democrat. I am a precinct chair, Galveston Co. Democratic Party Secretary, Deputy Voter Registrar, campaign volunteer, phone bank and blockwalking pro, and I even have my own truck and float for parades. I am a retired steelworker (USW) and electrician (IBEW).

If Elected to Office:
I want to improve communications between the State Party and the Democratic Voters. The Democratic Party needs to run a 254 county strategy, not just pinpointing just a few legislative districts. Grassroots politics will expand Democrats' base in Texas. I want to be sure that Senate District 11 Democrats know what is going on with their Party and know how they can be heard by the Party. Also,we must simplify some of our rules, so we don't hinder participation and to remove the voter's belief that we are a good ole boys' party.

SD 13: John Behrman SDEC Committeeman

Brief Description:
I am a fifth-generation Texas Democrat, populist in orientation, progressive in fact.

If elected to office...:
I will implement a party-building program consistent with the Obama campaign nationally but rooted the Texas state's constitution and traditions of republican democracy.

My fellow Democrats:
To quote Glen MAXEY, Obama Floor Manager in the State Convention, “[Democratic] Party governance is broken.”

Every decision the State Democratic Executive Committee (“SDEC”) has made during this primary cycle has been wrong, and, as many of you saw at the district conventions, these decisions created massive, statewide chaos. Moreover, it appears that the dysfunction in the SDEC cost Barack Obama as many as 36 state delegates from this caucus.

The SDEC’s cycle of incompetence and indifference will create major problems for Barack Obama, Rick Noriega, and the county-wide Democratic candidates in Harris and Fort Bend Counties, unless we bring it to a stop at the state convention. For this reason, I am running for State Committeemen SD 13.

As some of you know, I am a 40-year resident of this Senate District, best known to delegates as Chairman of the SD Committee on Resolutions and Platform. In 2006, this caucus elected me to represent it on the Permanent Committee on Rules at the State Convention in Fort Worth. In this role, I worked with others across the state to make precedent-setting breakthroughs on what
was otherwise an ordinarily moribund committee.

I also serve as Executive Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Populist Caucus of the Texas Democratic Party. In that capacity, I am better-known across the state than my opponent and have participated with party leaders here, countywide, and statewide in building a strong, self-governing, self-sustaining party.

Less well-known, I have also been the Harris County Democratic Party’s senior election integrity official at the Central Counting Station Authority, as well as the state Democratic Party Master in two large-scale recounts. Some of you may know that the state party’s record on election integrity issues are shaky at best and are of tremendous importance in this election.

I am not a delegate to the state convention, but I will be there as a state caucus official and exhibitor.
I hope to be nominated by my fine Precinct delegation of Obama and Clinton supporters.

My campaign is simple:
While Obama has a majority of the delegates in this caucus and on the convention floor, the SDEC state-wide seats will largely be held by Clinton supporters. Therefore, we will need a strong voice to make them an integral and effective part of a party-building agenda. It is more urgent than ever:

CHANGE STARTS NOW!

Texas is a “battleground state” today with a Democratic majority waiting to rise up in support of Barack Obama and Rick Noriega, entirely capable of winning “down ballot” races:

SWEEP TEXAS!
Barack Obama has a five-point party-building plan that should get a jump-start between now and November.

In the past, the SDEC has done little or nothing between the convention and the November election. This Democratic Party inaction will not work in today’s political climate. We cannot let the state party apparatus continue with the incompetent and negligent programs we have all seen trickling down from Austin in past elections

SD 13 only has two seats on the SDEC and needs a strong, aggressive voice on the Committee, who is well-schooled on the rules and procedures. More importantly, our representatives need to understand how to implement technology for voter mobilization, and implement the best-practices for combating wide-spread voter suppression in Harris and Fort Bend County.

Our partisan friends who are Clinton supporters acknowledge that Barack Obama has set new standards for campaign finance, organization, and effectiveness. This is a new Democratic Party, our Party, and the SD 13 members on the SDEC need to reflect this new way of running a campaign.

I believe that with my experience and service, I can best support these ideals and programs, and with your support, we can take back our Party and turn Texas blue again!

SD 14: Garry Brown for SDEC Committeeman

Brief Description:
Currently I am the Assistant Director of the Travis County Democratic Party (TCDP).

As a native Texan, I and my family moved around quite a bit to places like Denver, Colorado, New Orleans and Lafayette, in Louisiana, and McAllen, Texas. I am fortunate to have grown up around such diverse populations, and it has contributed greatly to who I am as a person today.

I worked on my first political campaign serving as the volunteer coordinator for the Bill Clinton primary campaign in Denver in 1992. Later that year, I worked on both a U.S. Senate and a state house district write-in campaign.

After moving back to Austin, I was privileged to be on the staff of Congressman Lloyd Doggett’s first campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994. I served as a Congressional Aide in his District Office here in Austin from 1999 to 2001. In 2002, I moved from Austin a second time and was hired as the first field organizer in Des Moines, Iowa for the Iowa Democratic Party’s statewide coordinated campaign.

The following year I started my first tour of duty with the Travis County Democratic Party. I am currently on my second tour of duty. In between, I went to Washington D.C. to work for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest GLBT rights organization in the country, as a regional field organizer for 13 western states plus Texas and Arkansas. As part of my duties, I came back to Austin to help during the last three weeks of the No Nonsense in November Campaign in 2005.

I came back to Austin and to the Travis County Democratic Party after 13 months at HRC. As the Assistant Director for the last 2+ years, I can count as part of my accomplishments that I have recruited dozens of precinct chairs and trained them, I have increased TCDP sustaining members by over 35%, and I (together with three other staff members) have just put together the largest county convention in Texas and in TCDP history.

If Elected to Office:
I have a history of working with diverse groups, listening to their issues, and not only taking their concerns to decision-makers but advocating for their positions. Simply, I will continue doing this as your SDEC member. Additionally, I want to continue Travis County’s progressive voice on the SDEC. Coming from a county party stand point, the rules are, at times, confusing, cumbersome, and contradictory. I want an opportunity to change this and make the rules more understandable and clear for everyone.

I believe that I bring a unique voice to the SDEC. I ask for your support.

SD 14: Scott Cobb for SDEC Committeeman

Brief Description:
I am a progressive Democrat who attended my first TDP State Convention in 1984 as a delegate from SD 14. One of the ideas that motivated me as a young Democrat back then was that everyone should give back by performing some sort of national service, whether in the military, the Peace Corps, VISTA or AmeriCorps, which came later. In 1986, I left Austin for two years of service in the Army. After the army, I spent many years living abroad.

I attended the University of Texas with the help of a small Human Rights scholarship that I received when I was 19 after I led a strike against my employer one summer in Houston. I was working as a lifeguard for a local private neighborhood organization that had an unwritten rule that did not allow African-Americans to swim at the pool. Yes, such attitudes existed in Houston even in the 1980s! One day, the manager closed the pool after a guest had brought a couple of African American children to the pool. I protested by leading a strike and was fired. A few months later I got an unexpected call from an organization that had seen coverage of the strike on TV offering me and my co-strikers small Human Rights scholarships. That was one of my formative experiences that led to my involvement in the TDP a couple of years later because I learned that it was possible and necessary to fight for a just society.

Most recently, I have attended TDP State Conventions as a delegate in 2002, 2004, 2006 and again this year.

Since 2004, I have been on the chair's advisory committee on the platform. In 2004, I was also elected to represent SD 14 on the Platform Committee at the State Convention. Both on the advisory committee and on the elected Platform Committee, I have strongly advocated for the party to take progressive stances on issues such as universal health care, ending the occupation of Iraq, the death penalty and other issues. I have also always solicited the input of Travis County Democrats in developing the party platform. This year, I received many excellent suggestions that I was able to get into the draft of the platform.

Last year, I wanted to get the TDP to place a referendum question on the primary ballot asking Texas Democrats if they supported ending the occupation of Iraq and bringing our troops home. I called it the "Vote US Out of Iraq" initiative. I visited many of the Democratic Clubs in Austin asking them to support putting the referendum on the ballot. Every club I asked endorsed the idea. The Travis County Democratic Party County Executive Committee also endorsed the idea. The proposal was brought to the State Democratic Executive Committee twice and it was killed twice, even though a majority of the SDEC supported it. The first time it was tabled because someone made a motion that it was not in the Party Rules that the SDEC could put a referendum on the ballot. However, the Texas Election Code does allow the SDEC to put a referendum question on the ballot. The second time it was killed along with several other proposed referendum proposals after another bogus parliamentary ruling. I worked with several SDEC members, including both of our current SD 14 SDEC members, to build support for the Iraq referendum. We had confirmed that we had the votes to pass it on the SDEC, but someone in the party leadership apparently did not want us to put a referendum on Iraq on the ballot. Part of my motivation was to use the Iraq referendum as a way to engage potential new voters and bring them into the Texas Democratic party.

In 2006, I tried to get the State Convention to approve a resolution calling for the impeachment of Bush. It failed on a close vote on the floor of the convention. It may be too late now to impeach Bush, but I am sure that history will consider him the worst president in U.S. history who deserved impeachment.

I have worked many years against the death penalty in Texas and I succeeded in 2004 in getting a plank in the platform supporting a moratorium on executions. I have held a meeting of an anti-death penalty caucus at each state convention since 2004. We just renamed it "Democrats Against the Death Penalty Caucus". It meets Friday, June 6, at noon in Level 3 Room 6A at the convention.

If Elected to Office:
One thing I want to do is build the party by finding new ways for grassroots Democrats to impact the direction of the party.

SD 14: Susan Shelton SDEC Committeewoman

Briefly Description:
I am a Precinct Chair, grassroots activist, and I volunteer on numerous campaigns. I am concentrating on down-ballot races because it has been so difficult for them to get attention with all the excitement at the top of the ballot.

If elected to office...
I will work to educate the electorate. I am an active member of several blogs, and believe that we can use this technology to reach out to people who are not currently involved. It is also important to train new precinct chairs so that they know how to reach out to Democrats in their neighborhoods. The first step in breaking voter suppression is getting information to the voters!

SD 17: Lawrence Edwards SDEC Committeeman

Brief Description:
I am a "yellow dog" Democrat, who has become increasingly aware that the Republican Party does not have the interest of me, my familily, or my friends and neighbors, at heart. I am a Viet Nam Era Veteran of the Army Security Agency. I will celebrate 30 years of marriage in June of 2008. I have two daughters and 1 grandson. I am a Christian Minister at Friendship Community Bible Church in Sugar Land, Texas. I have served as a Harris County Grand Juror, a mentor to young men at Holub Middle School (Alief School District), a mentor to inmates at the Jester 3 and Carol Vance Units of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. I have 40 years of experience in the IT industry as a Programmer, Programmer/Analyst, Analyst, Business Systems Analysts and Software Engineer. I am currently Vice President of Sonetics Corporation (Computer Software), President of Houston Business Assets (Real Estate Investors), and Project Manager of Otten Consulting Group.

I have attended three State Conventions, and served as National Delegate and Texas Delegation Floor Whip at the 1988 National Democratic Convention. I have served as a Deputy Voter Registrar, Precinct Chair, Harris County Co-Chair of the Statewide Campaign of Judge Morris Overstreet, and Senate District 7 Campaign Coordinator for the Jesse Jackson Campaign in 1988. I am currently intimately involved in the Presidential Campaign of Senator Barack Obama, serving as a co-founder of the SD17 Obama Steering Committee.

If Elected to Office:
My first order of business, which I have already begun, is to put plans in effect to welcome and open up the process for participation by the people who voted in the Democratic Primary for the first time, those who participated for the first time in precinct caucuses, Senate District/County conventions, and those attending their first State Democratic Convention. We cannot take their participation for granted, nor can we automatically count them as Democratic Party operatives. We must woo them and persuade them that they need to work closely with us to be agents for change in our party, our state and our nation.

My second order of business will be to begin formulating plans and procedures for maximizing the turnout to support Democratic candidates in the November General election from the top of the ballot to the bottom. I will work within existing Senate District structure whenever possible, but will not hesitate to work outside the structure if working within it is an impediment.

My third order of business will be to begin preliminary analysis of the redistricting process to ascertain the availability of projected growth and demographics since the 2000 Census. Also to familiarize myself with the tools available to the Texas Democratic Party and the legislative process including the identification of the predominate players involved.

My fourth order of business will be to analyze current procedures for voting and participating in precinct caucuses and conventions with the thought that sign-in process are time consuming and should be evaluated for automation. Perhaps we can eliminate some of the frustration for voters particularly when we have great turnout.

I will attend SDEC meeting with the attitude that I am an agent for change, not merely someone attending and fitting in. Most of the work that I envision will not take place at SDEC meetings, where I see my primary objectives will be to take care of the fudiciary duties required of the body. I will reach out to SDEC members across the State to gain concensus on the agenda I hope to set for myself and those willing to participate with me. .

I will be at ease dealing with officials on all levels. I will not intimidated nor reluctant to voice my ideas on matters that are important to me or the people that I represent. I will always speak up for transparency, inclusion and respectful, and ethical treatment of members of our Democratic Party no matter what their position.

Brief Description:
I am seeking reelection to the committeeman position for Senate District 19, I have been involved in politics for more than 30 years in many capacities from election clerk to election Judge to County Chair for 30+ years, and have attended the State Conventions continuously since 1976.

If elected to office:
If re-elected, I will continue to promote Texas Democrats and mobilize the rural vote. I am a long time progressive populist even before the PPC was formed, living in West Texas which is a mostly conservative area. I have worked to promote several Democrats campaign and I know the activists who can help with the campaigns in several of the Counties here in West Texas. Mobilizing the rural vote is a daunting task and it will be difficult to turn Texas BLUE without it.

SD 20: Sylvia Samaniego: SDEC Committeewoman

Brief Description:
"Tell me I forget, Show Me, I might Remember, Involve Me I Understand" this is an American Indian Proverb and is basically how I've been approaching life lately, especially in the political arena. Dennis Kucinich's first attempt as a Democratic Presidential Candidate was my introduction to politics. He had so much courage and his platform resonated with me. I wanted to do everything I could to get him elected. I became a precinct chair, joined various groups, protested, wrote letters, campaigned. I firmly believe that when we get people around issues we get more democrats elected.

If Elected to Office:
Congratulations on being elected to the State Democratic Convention! I'm interested in the Grassroots Committee. I believe that is where our strength lies. We need to get trained and organized but more than anything we need to communicate with our base.

I am running for the State Democratic Executive Committee position to be our local voice in the Party. Basically, I want to improve the communication between the State Democratic Party and the local party. Because I have been actively involved, I want to serve on the Grassroots Committee and be the link between the state party and our local party. I will continue to increase voter registration and voter turnout as I have in the past as Precinct 87 Chair. You can count on me to work with our local party to plan and implement training sessions and materials to increase local grassroots activity around the state. Corpus Christi is hosting the 2010 Texas Democratic Convention and it is imperative we work together for the good of the party, beginning now.

Senate District 20's current Representative is from Hidalgo County: Rosalie Wiesfeld. She has completed her term. An agreement between Hidalgo and Nueces representatives alternates two-year terms for our SDEC male and female representatives. The agreement ensures representation for both counties within Senate District 20. Ms. Wiesfeld has indicated she intends to retain her position and breach the agreement. Danny Noyola, Jr. has served his term and has chosen to uphold our agreement.

My qualifications to seek this position are as follows:

When people get behind issues, we elect Democrats, who haven’t held a statewide office since 1994.
Let’s work together and turn Texas BLUE again!

Please call or e-mail me with your support, issues and ideas or suggestions. Thank you.

SD 24: John Pettit SDEC Committeeman

Brief Description:
Past County Chair and longtime progressive activist

If Elected to Office:

  1. Transparency in Democratic Party finances. The members of the SDEC, and for that matter donors to the Party, should be able to see how donations are being spent. The SDEC cannot fulfill their fiduciary duty without this information.
  2. The Democratic Party won the lottery with the huge influx of people who participated in the convention process this year, from precinct to county to the state conventions. The Party should utilize this information in an internal database of activists which is owned and maintained in-house. There were 1.3 million folks who showed up at the precinct conventions, and I refuse to allow that gold mine to be wasted in spreadsheets that cannot tell us much of anything.
  3. I refuse to live in fear of anything; most particularly the opposition party. They are Cons. Con artists, convicts (cough Scooter Libby cough), and generally contrary to the public good. They will not like an outspoken aggressive progressive, so they can Kiss My Fluffy Donkey Tail.
